Recently a friend of mine and fellow believer was asked the following question by an atheist: “How is it that God gives you free will, but everything happens according to his will?”
At first thought, this seems like a complicated and profound question. It isn’t. The answer is: Not everything happens according to God’s will because he has given us free will. We are the ones who rebel and go against His teachings and instructions and all the good that God wants to do for us, with us, and through us.
How do we determine God’s will as an individual?
Most of us are woefully ignorant about God’s plan for our lives. We can determine what God wants for our lives by reading the Scriptures.
2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.”
We have a choice we can choose to repent and live an obedient life with God, or not.
God created Adam and Eve and gave them the ability to choose to obey or disobey him. They chose disobedience. From that moment on, everyone who has been born since then has inherited a sinful nature. The good news is that we don’t have to stay in that condition. Because of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we have the choice to be born again through His shed blood and walk out our lives according to the will of the Father.
John 3:16, 17, 33 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten son, that whoever believes in Him shall have everlasting life. God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved. These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world, you will have tribulation, but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
